STEVE SOBBS OPEN SPACES

“Steve sobs comes by way of Eric Littmann. As a local, he also releases music as Phantom Power and produces the collective Phantom Posse, and on the full-length Open Space, the sentiment is large the temper is contained all mustering up behind muffled vocal tones, tappered-in field recordings, pulsating keyboards, arpeggiating guitars that follow a linear swirling. And that’s exactly what I love about how Littmann finds a rythm that ebbs and flows, but it doesn’t aim for the superfluous or gusto. Lyrically, on ‘Wide Open,’ the cumulation of Open Spaces and its glimpse of both rural and urban transitions go something like this:

“it’s 3AM and all you’re friends have got places to be
you drank yourself drunk hanging over the rail
down on south street
trying to catch a wave in your hands

walking south i saw some man writing his name in paint
i caught myself wishing it was me
hitting concrete, ringing out who i am
again and again.”

bXu_dnfHLittmann, did the horrendous task of encapsulating nothing into a jar, something short of lighting but just as fast if you weren’t looking at that precise moment, something the restless do. There’s a large probability you wouldn’t be, because  it’s not the simple edifice of the millions of vibes of a city, it’s not, “The Nothing” in a jar that’s brilliant, it’s the fact that nothing is nothing, and he was around to see it and put it into song, into an entire record, by being the device that captured the crumbs that fell into the cracks of pavement, the tiny shards of unrest into inspiration.”
