This just in… Cameo Gallery is closing its doors

How can we ever fill the growing black void in the NYC music scene to stop the straight up hemorrhaging of our beloved venues? With Glasslands, Spike Hill, Death By Audio, Trash Bar, and now Cameo Gallery (arguably the best left over) gone, New York is in some serious need of a support system. I’ll expand on this in full in a future article, (funny enough that I was already working on prior to the news.) For now, the short answer, is use your dollar. Support local scenes, support local music, and put your dollar in a local gig where it’s needed. While it may not be enough to keep venues from being priced out from absorbent rent increases by greedy property owners in the long run, right now, it will ease some pain. Here’s the bitter-sweet goodbye from the team at Cameo themselves below, but we’ll miss you too… and make sense of this for the time being… Shouldn’t we be talking about this when we’re older? Like institutions have historically had “their run.” Most importantly i’d like to go on, I hope your legacy won’t be in vain or that any venue lost in the unsustainable and unlivable climate of New York inflation won’t be in vain. I hope that you live on by the actions the community takes to prevent and minimize this dilemma inflicting NYC housing and property ownership by anyone that isn’t a part of the millionaire or billionaire sect. Now all that speak of, “we are the majority vs them the minority” is like punching under water when we aren’t acting in favor of our numbers.

As all good things must come to an end, Cameo Gallery will be closing its operations on Nov. 21st, 2015. We are extremely grateful for the opportunity to have been part of an amazing music scene. We want to give a heartfelt thanks to all those who have been a part of our existence since we opened our doors 7 years ago. We’ve seen some great acts blow through our intimate space, to name a few: Neon Indian, Twin Shadow, Blood Orange, Toro y Moi, Sharon Van Etten, The War on Drugs, Nicolas Jaar, Mumford & Sons, St. Lucia and let’s not forget legendary DJs like Frankie Knuckles, Juan Atkins, DJ Sprinkles, and countless more. In the meantime, we invite you to come enjoy the last events we have in store. CMJ is right around the corner and we’ll be announcing all of our final shows and parties as the weeks dwindle down.
