I made my way to the front of the crowd, immediately two excited fans and I struck up a conversation. When you’ve only vaguely heard of a band name, excitement is met with curiosity: “Just who were The Head And The Heart?” I asked to two shocked fans wondering what you’d expect from that sort of question. They gladly told me they were a band who made a solid folk-rock record when they started out that, “Now they’re more like an indie rock band that sounds just amazing!” The crowd erupted into a huge cheer, as the band lined up behind respective instruments (Keys, drums, bass, guitar, omni-chord, and five very well greased vocals.)
The night went something like this: new material, multiple crowd encouragements to give it up to Team Coco for live streaming the event, older material, acoustic numbers, and an epic closer that included those aforementioned five vocal harmonies, doing a much welcomed a cappella breakdown; the sold out crowd at Rough Trade joined in on the southern-tinged harmonies making my first impression of The Head And The Heart a memoriable one.
The band are now on a tour to celebrate the launch of their latest “Indie Rock” album Signs Of Light. Thanks to Team Coco for inviting us out; enjoy some of the many angles I managed to squeeze my way into, when I had to push through the crowd to get upstairs a fan patted me on the shoulder and said, “Awesome, they deserved the press.” (For what it’s worth, The Head And The Heart have really great fans.)
