In the first few seconds of LOVE SPREAD’s remix of BIG FIGMENT’s single “Cut Knuckle”, Jennae Santos’ stage-whispered phrases cascade over boinging synths, repeating, as a mantra, “There is no escape. We pay for the violence of our ancestors.”
LOVE SPREAD uses MIDI-mapped guitars, sped up almost beyond recognition, to achieve their signature twisted synthpop sound, making the tune feel more like a mashup than a remix. At only 2:49, it’s short and sweet, a colorful whirlwind of splashy synths and drum machines. It’s a well-executed example of symbiotic hybridity, the balls-to-the-wall antics of both groups complimenting each other in a psychedelic carousel ride you’re bound to have on repeat.
This is the first remix in a compilation of remixes by other local heroes and friends of songs from BIG FIGMENT’s LP CHIMÆRICS to be released in the spring of this year. Download it on their Bandcamp page here.
Also this spring: BIG FIGMENT plays Meltfest, presented by Indie Bushwick, ELEVTRTRAX, DoNYC and Soundfly, on Sunday, March 20th at C’mon Everybody. Don’t miss them! RSVP here.
