On this grey New York City day, let Roy Ayers add a little splash of spring sun. On “Everybody Loves the Sunshine”, the titular track of Roy Ayers Ubiquity’s 1976 album, Roy is able to actually distill the essence of a sunny day. “It’s just bees and things and flowers,” he sings, and, you know, I know what he means. It doesn’t matter what you’re up to—there’s no need to focus on the details—the rays sprinkle a little magic on whatever it is. Like a long day in the sun, the high-pitched string line that runs throughout almost the entire track leaves you feeling dazed, but in a good way. I don’t think Roy is playing the vibes on this particular recording, but he sure is playing the vibes, if you know what I mean. Today is gonna go your way if you just “feel what I feel, when I fell what I feel, when I’m feeling…in the sunshine!”
