“Basement” by Toy Cities is my pick for the song of the summer – that is, in a reclusive anti-summer sort of way. It’s the most upbeat song about withdrawing from the world and holing up in a basement you’ll ever hear.
The song’s high energy drum and bass rhythms are tempered with just the right amount of dream-pop undertones: hypnotic guitar lines, soft synthesizers, and soothing vocal lines that reassure us, whatever happens out there in the wild summer months that “…in the basement I know I’m safe”.
