“It’s interesting to see how the whole industry of indie rock, or the culture of indie rock, has really grown from very humble beginnings. When I was promoting independent music, that was a concept most people weren’t familiar with. When I came out to go to school at Evergreen [State College] in Olympia, KAOS-FM, the radio station here, had a policy that was instituted by John Foster, who was a real visionary. He stated, because we were a community-based radio station, we should prioritize homemade and independent records. If you had a show and you wanted to play two hours of Grateful Dead, you couldn’t do that, because they were on Warner Brothers. That really pissed off a lot of the students at Evergreen at the time. Instead, you played the first X 45, things like that.” – Bruce Pavitt (founder of Subpop Records)
